RAILWAY DISMANTLING PROGRESS IN NORTH
The work of dismantling the section of railway track betw r een Okaihau and Rangiahua, where railway operations were suspended many years ago, is being expedited by the employment of more men.
About nine miles of track, over which commercial trains never ran. are being pulled up, and the rails and sleepers transported to Tangowahine, where they are to be used in the construction of the Dargaville connection, abandoned at the same time as the Fangiahua section, but now to be completed to the township. Steel rails and sleepers are difficult to obtain at present and the availability of supplies in the North, sufficient to go a long way toward completing the Dargaville construction, is regarded as a distinct windfall.
Recently 18 additional men have been employed on the Public Works Department dismantling gang, and the wmrk is proceeding at a great pace. Although several special trains have been used, there is a big accumulation of sleepers, almost filling the Okaihau yard.
