LABOUR PLANS TO PREVENT STOCK THEFTS
[Per Press Association Copyrlght.l CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
The Government’s plan to prevent and detect stock thefts by amendments of the Stock Act was explained in some detail in advice received by the executive of the Canterbury Sheep Owners Union. It was reported that the amendment provided the right of inspection of travelling stock by Justices of the Peace, police officers, stock inspectors or transport officers. The secretary said that a Bill to amend the Act was now being drafted. In addition to the provision for inspectors to inspect waggons carrying stock, it was provided that a farmer should have the right to ask for an inspection by an authorised person where he had reason to believe stock had been picked up in mobs, being driven on hoof or carted by lorry. The Bill was expected to provide for the compulsory carriage of consignment notes or waybills describing the number and type of stock being driven or carted. Several executive members expressed appreciation of the additional safeguard which the amendment would provide.
