Ice Jam Sweeps Away Niagara Falls Bridge

(Received 10 a.m.)

MONTREAL, January 26. An ice jam swept away Niagara Falls View Bridge linking the United States and Canada. The, ice pack reached a height of 70 feet. The steel arches in the centre of the bridge buckled, and the structure was slowly carried downstream. Ice enveloped the hydro-electric power plant on the Canadian side and threatened to sweep it out. The employees escaped shortly before the ice cut off the entrance. Sight-seeing boats were trapped. Ice rose 20 feet in three hours, and is still rising. Gales broke up the ice on Lake Erie and the entire upper river is filled with gigantic “chunky,” which is thundering over the falls.
