BRICK WORKERS’ AWARD CLAIMS

The claim of the New Zealand Federated Brick, Tile,- Pottery and Clay Workers’ Industrial Association of Workers for a new award, was heard by a Conciliation Council today. The principal proposals, with the employers’ counter-proposals in parentheses, were as follows: Forty-hour week (same); overtime at time and, a-half for three hours (four hours); thereafter double rates (same).
Minimum hourly wages, Hangers and moulders, 3/- (2/64); stickers and pipe makers, 2/10 (2/5); setters and drawers, 2/9 (2/4); burners, 2/9 (2/3); all other workers, 2/6 (2/2),); underage workers, 27/6 to 82/6 (15/- to 72/6); female workers not mentioned (15/- to 45/-).
Maximum temperature of kiln in which workers will work, 120 deg. F. (130 deg.). Other conditions cover specific work and holidays. The proceedings were almost entirely in committee, questions at issue being wages and holidays, on which no agreement was reached.
