BAY CRICKET

Big Scoring At Rangiahua

Only three games in the Bay championship series were played on Sunday. Kawakawa was unable to field a team to travel to Kaikohe. At Kerikeri, the Rangiahua batsmen struck form, and amassed the big total of 222 for six wickets.

Pat Middleton played another very fine innings for 87, while Lawson. Blundell and Cook all contributed largely to the total. Middleton also performed meritoriously with the ball, finishing up with the splendid average of 7 for 40 and 6 for 33. East, Gibbons and Riddell were the only batsmen to attain double figures for Kerikeri, T. Kendall returning the best bowling figures of 3 for 48. Ohaeawai, on their own ground, created another surprise by defeating Okaihau, who were well in the running for the championship.

The Ohaeawai wicket, a turf one, is beginning to crack up after the long spell of dry weather, and requires a lot of water now to get it back into reasonably good playing order. Grice, the Ohaeawai left-hander, got a lot of work on the ball, and had all the Okaihau batsmen tied up, with the exception of Sigley, who scored 21 out of the visitors’ first innings total of 30, and 27 out of 49 in the second innings. Inwcod was the most destructive of the Okaihau bowlers, securing the remarkable figures of 8 wickets for 9 runs in Ohaeawai’s first innings, while Sigley carried on the good work with 5 for 8 in the second. At Punakitere, the home side secured the maximum points by easily defeating Moerewa by an innings margin. The veteran Knightsbridge compiled a well-earned 70 in his usual crisp style, with Phynn, who shaped well in the rep. trials recently, next in order with 27. Dixon, for Moerewa, another rep. candidate, top-scored with 21.
