REMANDED. John Edward McElroy, aged 45, charged with assaulting Constable James Butler, on December 25, and further with killing Butler, thereby committing manslaughter, was remanded until January 20. Butler died in hospital at Dunedin.
BLAMED DRINK. When Alfred James Smart pleaded guilty in the Dunedin Police Court to six charges of giving false alarms, the police stated there had been 79 such alarms in the past year. Accused, however, could not be connected with others than those mentioned in the charge. Smart, a man on sustenance, blamed drink for his conduct. Pie was remanded until Monday for a report from the probation officer.
LONDON WOOL SALES. The first series of London wool sales for 1938 commence on January 18 and conclude on February 3. The catalogue totals 116,200 bales. Included are 76,450 Australian and 31,600 New Zealand. BUTTER PRICES. Butter quotations on the London market are steady. New Zealand choicest salted 112/-, unsalted. 113/- to 114/-; Australian, salted and unsaltcd. 111/-.
