Modern Shepherdess In South Australia
A large Australian sheep station may not bo thought the most natural business for a woman to undex'take. But it is all in a day’s work for Joan Borthwick. who for more than a year has been general overseer of a property of 4500 acres, 26 miles out from the main town of the far West Coast, While the station is not largo com-
pared with some Australian sheep stations. yet it is sizable, and it has 1500 j sheep and other stock. Apart from directing operations, Miss Borthwick does odd jobs around the place with an efficiency and method that is wellknown among the pastoralists of the district. She takes part in sheep mustering, tends the cows and horses and finds time to cultivate a beautiful garden in a wilderness of scrub.
