Operations for January
THE VEGETABLE GARDEN
During breaks in the weather, sow carrots, dwarf beans, dwarf peas, lettuce.
Harvest ripened crops, and leave the ground in a rough state to sweeten.
Burn all useless dry rubbish and dust the ashes on the soil. Use the hoe lightly and frequently, particularly after rain. Watch your cabbages and. cauliflowers carefully. Give them frequent hosings, and if necessary take other measures against the fly. Dust the buds of cauliflowers with tobacco powder. The buds must be saved at all costs.
. 'HIE FLOWER GARDEN
Iris Tingilanas that have been well baked in the sun, may be stored in a dry shed until planting time. Weeding will be the most important work after the recent heavy rains.
Staking and tying are other operations that must not be neglected. Chrysanthemums may be pinched back again if a good bushy plant bearing plenty of flowers is wanted. Zinnia. French and Guinea Gold marigolds, celosia, kochia, salvia plants may still be planted.
Iris stylosa should have the leaves cut off to about six inches. Clean out all dead leaves from the base, apd encourage the sun to reach the bases of the plants. Do not water. Flag irises should have all dead leaves pulled away to allow the sun to reach the base of the plants. Do not water. Caterpillars, grasshoppers, etc., are becoming troublesome. Spray - with arsenate of lead. Plant gladioli for flowering during April. Zinnias, dahlias, carnations, phlox Di’ummondii, and other plants that are flowering should have the flowers removed as soon as they begin to fade. If these are allowed to go to seed, the
plants will soon stop flowering. Gladioli that have finished flowering will be turning yellow now. They should be lifted. The leaves should be left on until they have dried ofl'.
