WHITELAW COMES IS LIGHT AGAIN
PLUNKET SHIELD
[Special To “Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND. This Day. Auckland won the toss when the second Plunket Shield game was commenced at Eden Park today. From the outset it appeared they would take full advantage of the perfect conditions. The usual pair. Whitelaw and Pestles, opened the innings, and in three-quarters of an hour 50 had been scored and four bowlers tried. At lunch they were still together, with 134 on the board. Mulcock, who sensationally went through the Wellington team early in the week, commenced the attack, and packed all the fieldsmen except two on the leg side, with a suicide squad close to the batsmen. Whitelaw Starts Quickly. He bowled only two overs betfore giving way to Burtt, a slow trundler, but half-an-hour later came back again. Cromb was then bowling at the other end, 18 having been taken from Read. Whitelaw got into his stride quicker than did Pestles, and though runs came consistently ,lhe only boundaries were two off Read early in the day. Though few runs were taken from Mulccck (12 in five overs), that was mostly due to the fact that he was bowling wide on the leg side. Mcßae replaced him. and both batsmen scored at will, though soberly enough. Little Incident. Surviving a solo appeal from Cromb for 1.b.w., Whitelaw snicked him luckily clear of the wicketkeeper in reaching forward to the next ball. He reached his half-century in 80 minutes, Postles then being 37. Thoroughly set .the batsmen increased their tallies without incident, Postles pass' ing the 50-mark in 150 minutes, by pulling Cromb to the fence.
Whitelaw Another 100. Mcßae, the left-hander, who was swinging from the off, went on again after lunch with Burtt at the other end. The morning atmosphere was recaptured, and the batsmen were masters of the situation, Postles was exploiting his favourite leg shots, and he reached the 70’s with Whitelaw in the 90’s, Cromb came back again with the total at 165. to be swung to the boundary by Whitelav/, who reached 99 with another brace. Postles played a maiden to Read, who had replaced Mcßae several overs previously, and then Whitelaw got his second Plunket Shield century of the season by chopping Cromb past the slips.
