The Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Otago at Eden Park yesterday saw. Auckland take a commanding; lead, scoring 457 runs in the first innings, and leaving Otago 198 to make to avoid an innings defeat.
At the dose of the ca3 r ’s play, Otago ■ had scored 30 runs for nc loss.
The outstanding performance of the ; day' was a last-wicket partnership between Carson and Cowie, which realised 119 runs. Carson and Whitelaw, r ,;wha. also associated in a record third-wicket partnership of 445 against Otago in 1936, contributed largely to Auckland's total. runs for Otago. Whitelaw reached 100 after patiently ~ watching four deliveries on the oh - pass by. He took Just over three . .hours for his century.
