HOPE FOR THE WORLD. Wi'iting in the “Yorkshire Observer,” Mr J. A. Spender says: “Looking out on the world today it is extremely doubtful whether there could be any war in Europe in which a first-class Power was involved which would not develop into a world war. In these circumstances critics of the Government should, I think, be very careful before advising Mr Eden to jump ahead of his colleagues and take a splashing line of his own. I believe that every year in which the peace is kept increases the chance of permanent peace. The sense that war under modern conditions is an incalculable hazard of which no one can foresee the outcome hangs heavily over the world, and has so far served to keep the peace. If all secrets could be revealed we should find it as strong in Germany, in Russia, and even in Italy, as in France or in Britain. It is thoroughly well justified, and the hope for the world is that it will lead to a corresponding sobriety of statesmanship. This may not for the moment seem very effective, but it is a real contribution to peace.”
