MYSTERY MISSION TO S. SEA ISLANDS
[Special To “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
The Imperial escort vessel Wellington, commanded by Commander G. N. Loriston-Clarke, is to undertake a mission to the South Sea Islands. The vessel was to have left Auckland next Tuesday on a short visit to Napier and Gisborne, which was to have been followed, after a return to Auckland, by a cruise to Wellington and Akaroa, but these visits have been cancelled and, instead, the ship will leave on Tuesday for Samoa. No further information is available as to the purpose of the visit to Suva. At intervals since the winter cruises of the New Zealand warships in 1936, when the escort vessel Leith asserted the sovereignty of Great Britain over certain islands in the Phoenix Group, the question of the possession of a number of islands in the South Pacific has caused several international discussions. It is not known whether the Wellington’s cruise has any connection with similar matters. i
