Chaplin Divorce Rumours Excite Film Colony

The film colony is agog over rumors of a separation between Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard, his third wife.

Chaplin refuses to comment, but his secretary says it is “quite ridicul ous.”

Chaplin and Paulette Goddard went away for a cruise to the East together in 1934. In 1936 they announced that they had been married a year. Charlie’s brother, Sydney, was surprised when told the news of a possible divorce.

“She has been a great influence in my brother’s life,” he said. “My brother is of a morose character, and her cheerfulness has helped him a lot.” Chaplin’s other wives were Mildred Harris and Lita Grey. Paulette Goddard is 27.
