Death of Professor Thomas
[Per Press Association. — Copyright .] AUCKLAND, This Day.
The death occurred to-day of Professor Sir Algernon Phillips Withiel Thomas, K.C.M.G., Professor Emeritus at the Auckland University College, aged 80 years. He was knighted at the time of the Coronation for his services to education. One of the four foundation professors at the Auckland University College in 1883, he had been chairman of the Auckland Grammar School Board since 1916, and recently attended five prize-giving ceremonies at Grammar Schools in two days. He stumbled on an uneven platform, and it is believed that he injured his heart while attempting to regain his foothold.
In a tribute to Sir Thomas this morning, the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, said he was one of the foremost figures in the educational activities of the Dominion. Thr value of his work as a scientist was acknowledged far beyond the boundaries of New Zealand. His work for the Auckland Grammar Schools during what was considered as his retirement years was a lasting monument to him as an educationist. It was a source of satisfaction to all who knew him, and especially the Government, when he was knighted, said Mr Fraser.
