English- American Co-operation New Force On Side Of Peace

(Received 1 p.m.)

LONDON, December 28. rpHE "DAILY TELEGRAPH,” IN A LEADING ARTICLE, SAYS: “IF A THE CHRISTMAS SEASON HAS BEEN SUSCEPTIBLE TO RELEGATION OF DIPLOMATIC TENSION, THAT WELCOME EFFECT MAY BE ATTRIBUTED NOT A LITTLE TO THE HARMONIOUS ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS OF THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN GOVERNMENTS.”

Describing as significant the “New York Times’ ” editorial urging parallel British and American roads to peace, the paper adds: “Such a declaration is no less welcomed and reciprocated in Britain, because there is no thought that such parallel action will be used by either party to pull out each other’s chestnuts from the fite.

“If the two Democracies move concurrently, it is because they have the same aims and the same great stakes for peace in the Far East, and that the facts have been forced rather vividly upon their recognition.”

Significant!

The “News Chronicle” considers the “New. York Times” article so remarkable, and its significance so great that it reproduces it in full with comment, saying:

“We entirely agree, indeed, we feel like the M.P. who rose in the House of Commons to observe, T say ditto to Mr Pitt.’ We say ditto to the “New York Times.”

The “Labour Daily Herald” gives prominence in its front page to “the best Christmas news for peace-loving nations and a further sign of growing British and American friendship and co-operation.”

New Force on Side of Peace.

The paper reproduces the New York article, and in a leader adds: “Present now in the international situation is a new force on the sde of peace. It is co-operation between Britain and the United States.

“A year ago or less it did not effectively exist; yet this co-operation is easily capable of being killed. “One thing that would kill it

stone dead is failure of trade negotiations between Britain and America, through insistence of sec-

tional interests here upon mainten-

ance of big tariffs,

“Another would be Britain’s failure to honour the principles and obligations of the Covenant of the League.”
