Christmas Day Tragedy At Tolago Bay

A farm labourer, Charles William Ward, 31, single, was drowned under particularly sad circumstances in the Uawa River, Tolaga Bay, on Christmas Day. He was spending Christmas with Mr and Mrs Dobbs; Wharekaka. About 7 , p.m. he took the children for a bathe. Mr Ward was unable to swim, and he got out of his depth. Valiant attempts were made to rescue him by Mr Dobbs, who is not a strong swimmer.
The dead man had-no relatives in New Zealand.
