ONLY 3 WHANGAREI MEN TURN UP
Cricket
[Special To ‘’Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
A most unfortunate position arose in regard to Whangarei’s participation in the Auckland Cricket Association’s Country Week tournament. Only three bona fide Whangarei players put in an appearance at the ground, there having been ap-
parently a complete break-down in the arrangements for the assembly of the team. In addition, there
was no playing material to hand. To keep faith with Selwyn Oraka, an eleven was got together, including I. Cooper, an ex-Auckland, representative, Winter, late of Broadwood, and P. Bright.
Whangarei Withdraw.
However, it was impossible to continue in the competition and Whangarei withdrew. This has caused not a little inconvenience to the Auckland Association, which has gone to a lot of trouble in arranging the tournament.
Whangarei could score only 57 in the first innings against Selwyn Oraka, the bowling of Callachan being too accurate, while good fielding also kept the runs down.
Selwyn Oraka replied with 114, B. Lowry, 34 not out, and'Callachan providing highlights. Callachan gave a bright and fast display to find the boundary five times in his 35. Dunn kept the batsmen quiet, but they took toll of the other trundlers. Outright Win.
Whangarei shaped better in the second innings, but Callachan and Wilkes kept good lengths and runs were hard to get. Requiring 54 runs to gain an outright win, the opening batsmen for Selwyn Oraka, Fisk and B. Smith, played aggressively. The former made 44 not out. which included seven boundaries, and both were unbeaten with a good margin- to spare. Details:— WHANGAREI. First Innings. McKay, b Callachan 13 W.
