KUPE CLUB CELEBRATES SECOND BIRTHDAY

\ MOTHER milestone ha;; been passed. Today the Kupe Club celebrate 1 u iL ceon:! birthday. We can look back with pride. For us 1937 has been a year of achievement. Our membership in the 12 months was almost doubled, and now our roil number approaches the 2,000 mark. The year has not passed with out us leaving some mark. With pressure of mace necessitated by the Calf am?. Sweet Pea Clubs, and the sponsoring of the planting of native trees as a fitting memorial for the centennial of the Dominion, to be celebrated in 1940, no huge happiness campaign could be planned as in the past. Nevertheless the Kupe Club has been recognised as an eff cclive force in the relief of suffering. At the request of Northlanders them elves a Happiness Campaign was launched, and, though little publicity war given the effort, it was outstandingly successful. Mrs Jones and her relief committee worked in close co-operation with the club and assistance was given to all needy cases brought to our notice. From far and near praise was given club ir.emberc for the splendid manner in which they responded to appeals for people in unhappy circumstances.

"To bring sunshine into the lives of others” is one plank on which the Kupe Club, builds its popularity and its success. Through the "Young Northlander,' boys and girls have a common medium of jcy and inspiration, and in doing good members have a common aim. Today is the Club’s birthday. It is ; also the occasion of our New Year's page. We have left good behind us . and now we embark on a future charged with possibility. A happy band —a useful band —the Northland Tribe marches into the New Year with colours flying. In the ; year to come we will continue in friendship; we will continue to share '■ this page of our very own. And we will work for happiness even harder than we have worked before. At Headquarters schemes are simmering—schemes that mean hard work for each warrior and maiden, for your i Chieftain and your Princess, and for ! all Headquarters staff. But these j schemes will mean happiness for more people; they will mean making our Northland an even better place to live in. , Big' things await us all in the coming year. More than over do we need a strong club—a loyal club. But when the time comes to launch any new undertaking—and that time will be soon—then Headquarters does I it with every confidence, secure in the | knowledge that behind them is the j most loyal body of young people in j the whole Dominion, i Greetings, then, my warriors, on i this our second birthday. Let us i march bravely into the new year, with ; “Onward” our motto and “Happiness” I our goal. !
