NO CONTRACT FROM U.S. POST OFFICE YET
(Received 10 a.rn.)
NEW YORK, December 23
Considerable significance is attached lo the fact that the Samoan Clipper will carry mails from New Zealand and. Australia, but not from the United States. Pan-American Airways has informed the Associated Press that the reason is simply that the United States Post Office has not granted a mail contract lo the company. Asked whether it would’extreme-
ly unprofitable to operate the lino without an essential revenue-produc-ing contract from the United States Post Office, and without passengers, Pan-Aynerican officials stressed the fact that other Pacific routes arc still operating without profit.
It had to be expected, they said, that at least a dozen flights would have to bo carried out before passengers would be taken over the route.
It is indicated that the failure of Congress to extend the Pan-American mail contract on September 25 will probably be rectified during the regular session opening in January.
