British Ships In Pacific
[Special To “Northern Advocate”! WELLINGTON, This Day.
It was recently reported that a hitch in the plan had thrown into the melting-pot the whole proposals for establishing a new line of British ships in the Pacific. : '
“There is no hitch so far as New Zealand is concerned,” states a reply of the Prime Minister, which has now become available. The Government is very anxious, in view of the large subsidies involved, that one of the projected CanadianAustralasran new ships should be on New Zealand articles and carry a Now Zealand crow, thus affording employment to our own seamen, and affording opportunities to our Own youths and young men to enter the maritime service and embark on sea-
faring careers. “It is also considered,” adds the Prime Minister, “that these Governments, in view of the large financial grants to be supplied by them, should have effective control, in the public interest, over the fares and freights to be charged, and Zealand Government is insisting that such control should be at least the equivalent of that provided in the existing Auckland-Vancouver mail contract.”
