TWO BIRTHDAYS IN ROYAL FAMILIES
(Received 10 a.m.)
LONDON, December 25
The King’s-broadcast had excelleht reception in all parts of the world. For the first time it was relayed to Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s, where there were large congregations. . The King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family motored through the thick fog to the Sandringham Church, and 6000 people gathered to see them going home.
His Majesty, seeing the extent of the assemblage, decided to walk back to Sandringham. The kindly gesture was greeted by numerous cheers. ;
Besides the general Christmas party at Sandringham, it was the birthday of the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra, the year-old daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, who received extra presents from the Royal Family in addition to Christmas 'gifts. The King’s Christmas tree, installed in Westminster Abbey, was soon sur-; rounded. A vast quantity of gifts and toys heaped up at the base are being sent to the children in the Westminster, Hospital, ', ‘ Court circles understand that the King’s statement that the people did not wish him to carry on, unvaried,; a tradition so personal to his father, is an intimation that further Christmjas broadcasts are unlikely in the future.
