Mr James Wotherspoon, of River Road, Horsham Downs. Hamilton, will celebrate his 94th birthday on Thursday. Mi- Wotherspoon was stationed with the militia at White Cliff. Taranaki, when the murders were committed and was a member of the party sent to investigate. Mr Wotherspoon was born in Ayrshire and came to- New Zealand at the ago of 19. Later he was in the employ of Mr Decimus Atkinson, a brother of Major Atkinson.

He returned to Scotland in 1871. but came back to New Zealand in 1884 to take up blacksmithing at Whangaroa. where he worked in the Kauri Timber Company’s factory. He I hen went, sheep farming at Whangaripo in iho Rodney County, and 19 years, ago went to live at Hamilton.
