Attempt to Refloat President Hoover
(Received 10 a.m.) MANILA, December 14,
The United States destroyers Allen and Baker attempted to lay out stem anchors to hold the hull of the President Hoover, which is on a reef off Formosa, in position until she could be lightened and refloated. A Japanese cruiser is reported to have transferred 200 persons, presumably the liner’s crew, and created an emergency hospital station on Hiyake Island.
The President Pierce is expected to arrive shortly to take off the remainder of the passengers, all of whom apparently were not taken off by the President McKinley.
