Clutch Operation
NEEDS THOROUGH CHECK. RIGHT COURSE TO TAKE. Clutch trouble is not so common as it used to be, but it still occurs at times, and it is not always due to the clutch assembly. There are several things that affect clutch operation besides the clutch, and, before installing new parts, a thorough check should be made to determine the trouble. A well-known factory recommends the adoption of the following course to decide where the trouble lies:— Check the clutch pedal adjustment. The pedal should have one-inch free travel before the clutch starts to disengage. Check the clutch pedal bushing for wear and for sticking on the Shaft. At this time lubricate the clutch pedal linkage. Check the front engine mountings and be sure that they are tight If they are oil-soaked it will be necessary to replace them, as an oil-soaked mounting is ineffective. Tighten the transmission cross member bolts and the transmission mounting bolts. Check the clearance between the transmission cross member and the U section plate. This clearance should be from .005 inch to .015 inch. This clearance is very important as it limits the fore and aft movement of the engine. It is advisable to hold this clearance to the low limit of .005 Inch. To get the specified clearances between the transmission cross member and the U section plate it will be necessary either to expand or compress the U-shaped top plate of the transmission mounting plate assembly. Tighten the engine side mounting bottom bolts and make sure that they do not bottom in the engine mounting. .Remove the top bolts from the engine side mountings and check the clearance between the mountings and the bracket. Take up clearances between the engine side mounting and the bracket by the addition of 3-8 inch plain flat washers. . .. . | Each of the above checks and adjustaments should be completed before any attempt is made to overhaul x clutch assembly to correct unsatisfactory operation. Chatter, grabbing and slippage of he clutch are sometimes caused by grease or oil getting on the clutch disc, flywheel or pressure plate durng assembly, according to mechanics. Extreme care should be taken to proect these parts and the work should )e done with clean hands. .Excessive mndling of the clutch may cause it io ibsorb some oily moisture, even j hough your hands seem reasonably I ■lean. A very slight amount of oil or j [reuse will cause serious clutch j rouble.
