“PICK-UPS” ON NORTHERN ROADS

Motorists will bo pleased to know that the electro-magnetic truck belonging to the Main Highways Board has been operating on Northland roads, collecting its quota of nails, bolts and other hardware which are apt to inconvenience those who travel on wheels.

The reactions of garage proprietors., faced with a falling away in custom for tyre repairing during the holiday season, may not bo so pleasant. The truck has already cleaned up the State highways in the North, proceeding up one side of the road and returning the other side to complete the sweeping operation. It is new Auckland bound.

The magnet, situated from three to four inches above the surface of the road, attracts all kinds of ironware. Statistics of its Northland pick-ups are not available as yet, but operating over 2131 miles in the South Island last year, the truck gleaned 7125 lbs. or an average of 3 1-3 lbs per mile, of nails, bolts, bits of old cars which had rattled off on the road, and other puncture-producing material.
