Dog Registration Fees. Dog registration fees for Whangarei County were fixed by the council today at the same basis as last year—--2/6 for sheep and cattle dogs, and 10/for all others.

Looking for Land. A party of men from Auckland, Wellington. Canada and. England, visited Kaitaia on Tuesday. They were making inquiries with regard to any large blocks of land available for purchase.

New Onerahi Jetty. The engineer, Mr W. M. Fraser, reported to the Whangarei Harbour Board yesterday that the pile-driving plant, together with building material, was transported to Onerahi. The old jetty was dismantled, old piles withdrawn. and a start made with the driving of new piles and the preparation of the other timbers.

Payment to Hokianga County Council. The Hokianga County Council today in acknowledging payment by the Whangarei County Council of £74 14/8, representing six years’ arrears of interest on loan adjustment, intimated that the amount had been accepted as a payment on account of its claim of over £2OO. As soon as legal advice had been obtained, it would advise whether it was proposed to press for the balance outstanding.

Most Dangerous Point. When methods of financing the reerection of Kiripaka Bridge were under consideration by the Whangarei County Council today, the chairman and several members expressed the opinion that the bridge was the most dangerous point in the county. “Last year,” commented Mr J. A. S. MacKay, “a car went over the bank, and it is a subject of wonderment to me that more accidents do not occur on the much-used structure."

Eradication of Ragwort. “Quite an honest attempt is being .made to get rid of ragwort in Northland. and fair progress is being made. Councillors could assist in reporting areas in which the weed is present to the inspector.” said the county chairman, Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, today. The council received advice from the local inspector of the Department of Agriculture. Mr N A. Bayley. that an assistant inspector had been re-engaged in connection with the eradication campaign in Whangaroi district. Investigations so far, Mr Bayley reported, had shown very favourable results from control measures.

Urquhart’s Wharf in Dangerous State,

Road Grant. Intimation from the district engineer by the Whangarei County Council today that £242 had been made available for expenditure on the TitokiParakao section of highway in grading and remetalling ox corners widened last financial year by the department.

Injury' To Hand. When a piece of wood slipped as he was operating a circular saw at the factory of ,itmcs and Whimp, Walton Street, at noon today, David Hannan.-, aged 15, of Park Avenue. Whangarei, suffered a deep cut of the middle finger of his left hand. He was admitted to hospital where his condition is good.

Truck Ablaze in Garage, Shortly after 1.30 p.m. today the fire alarm souxxdcd in Whangarei for a minor outbreak in the North Auckland Farmers’ Co-op. Garage, Walton Street. A second-hand vehicle being reconditioned, caught alight as a member of the staff was working on it. Flames burst from the cab and before the fire was quelled by patent extinguishers, damage was done to the upholstery and the roof of the vehicle. Portion of the seat, blazing fiercely, was removed to the sti'eet, where it was allowed to burn itself out. The Fire Brigade arrived smartly on the scene and used their auxiliary plaxtt in completing the work commenced by members of the garage staff. The outbreak is presumed to have been due to the battery short-circuiting.
