Kaitaia Library Committee Meets
A meeting of the Kaitaia Public Library committee was held on Monday afternoon. Members expressed satisfaction with the provision made for the new Encyclopaedia Britannica which has, for some time, been made available to subscribers. Mr Atkins placed before the meeting a statement showing the financial position of the library, as fiorn April 1. Subscriptions had amounted to £4O 5/, but the expenses, as a result of the new policy adopted in having the library in a separate building under the care of a full-time librarian, had been high, and up to the present a debit balance of £35 17 1 was shown. The expenses included: Rent £34 13/4, wages £3l and new books (Encyclopaedia Britannica) £3O 3/5. It was mentioned that the position was much better than it looked, as a substantial grant could be expected from the town board. While agreeing that it was highly desirable that some new books should be procured, members were of the opinion that the financial position did not justify the expenditure at the present time. The resignation of the chairman, due to other claims, was received, and the appointment of a successor was left to a later meeting. Mr John Parr, Librarian at Auckland, met the committee on Tuesday afternoon. His first suggestion was that to attract attention io the library a front window display oi bonks should be made, with a notice giving certain particulars about the library, including the hours of opening ann the subscription. Mr Barr referred to the likelihood of the restoration of the Govern mom subsidy under a new plan. He strongly urged that the Kaitaia Library should join the Libraries’ Association.
