Leckie, Miss Mitchell Certain Of Places In Team
[Special To “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND. This Day. The omission of Miss M. Mitchell and J. G. Leckie (Whangarei) from the list of Auckland candidates to compete at the Empire Games trials at Wellington has cheated a good deal of criticism. An inquiry in official circles gave the information that the Auckland selectors communicated with the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association and received a reply that it had been decided not to invite Miss Mitchell and Leckie to attend the trials, as they would meet with no opposition in their respective events —the ladies’ javelin throw and the men’s hammer throw. At the recent trial meeting at Carlaw Park, Miss Mitchell threw the javelin a distance of 112 feet two inches, which was 6 feet Gv inches better than the British Empire Games record.
