NEW ZEALAND SCENERY AT A GLANCE
Anyone picking up “New Zealand Railways Illustrated” and looking through its pages, even hurriedly, cannot but be impressed that New Zealand is crammed with scenic gems. That, of course, • is the object of the book. The publishers have set out to produce something which will attract the eye of the tourist immediately, and to persuade him, by means of pictures. that he simply must visit New Zealand. They have attained that object with four-colour productions of 71 scenic photgraphs, seven railway subjects and maps of the North and South Islands. The pictures are very well produced, and are a credit to the printers, Messrs. Ferguson and Osborn. Ltd., Wellington/
It is a pity that more of that type- of work is not produced in New Zealand, for it appeals strongly, and should warrant the extra expense. Northlanders will be pleased that the claims of this peninsula have not been overlooked, and pictures of the Waipoua Forest. Ninety-Mile Beach. Wairua Falls and Korikeri Falls have a place. I have only one criticism to offer, but 1 do not wish it to detract in any way from the merit of the publication. I am referring particularly to two pictures—those of the Waipoua Forest and the Ninety-Mile Beach —which, for mo. wore spoiled because they featured cars of the 1920 vintage. It is a pity that scenes so out-of-date should have been allowed to creep into a publication which is so up-to-date in every other respect.
