The old-fashioned plan of jiggling the throttle is fatal to easy starting with the modern down-draught carburettor. particularly if it has an accelerating pump attachment. The jiggling quickly floods the inlet, pipe with petrel and produces such a rich mixture that the engine refuses to fire. The best way of clearing the cylinders for a fresh trial is to push the car backwards with top gear engaged and the ignition switched oil. Alternatively use the staricr-moior. with the throttle hold wide open,
