MECHANICAL HAULAGE TO REPLACE HORSES?
If decisions made by the Whangarei Borough Council last night are carried into effect, municipally-owned horses, which have borne the burden of the borough ever since its inception, will shortly disappear from the streets of the town.
A special committee set up to consider the matter of horses recommended:
That conditions be prepared for a contract for the use of one horse and dray on full-time employment; that arrangements be made to dispose of the council’s horses anti drays; and that consideration be given to the provision of mechanical transport. While favouring mechanical haulage, which, he thought, should have been adopted years ago. the Mayor expressed the view that the council would require at least one horse always available. The committee's recommendations were adopted, the Mayor remarking that, before the borough horses were finally disposed of. the matter would again come before the council in some form.
