Successful Whangarei Candidates. Results are gazetted of examinations conducted by the Electrical Wiremen’s Registration Board in September, Successful Whangai’ei candidates in tho written section are as follows:-—G. C. C. Chissell, C. F. Clapham, R. W. Pattison, T. Young. New Kaeo Courthouse, At to-day’s sitting of the Whangarei Court, Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., hinted that he would be unable to accept special fixtures for two days prior to Christmas. “Tiro new Kaeo courthouse will probably be opened about that time by the Minister of Justice,” he said.

St. Andrew’s Day. Flags in Whangaroi are flying proudly in the breeze to-day. marking St. Andrew’s Day. Banks are closed and the opportunity has been taken to play a cricket match ih Whangarei between the staffs of the Wangarei banks v. the staffs of Dai’gaville banks. At one time St. Andrew’s night concerts were an annual feature here, but for the past few years the practice has been discontinued.

Amenities for State Housing Block. Intimation that the, proposal for the council to construct, with the usual assistance from the Employment Promotion Fund, the concrete footpaths and storm-water sumps at Dobbie’s subdivision, had been accepted, was received by the Whangarei Borough Council from the district engineer last night. The council decided to submit to the department the price quoted by the engineer, £507 2/6. If this is approved, the work will be proceeded with immediately.

Remarkable enthusiasm marked the inauguration of Henry Wilson’s sensational liquidation sale. Owing to trade exigencies reductions have reached a lower level than heretofore, consequently prices are very much in favour of buyers.

Street Collection

Permission to hold a collection in the streets of Whangarei on Friday, December 3, was last night granted by the Whangarei Borough Council to the local division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

Lights to Dim Lights. Neon signs, bearing the notice “dim headlights,” are to be installed by the Whangarei Borough Council, one at the corner of Maunu and Otaika Roads and the other at a point near the water-trough, Upper Bank Street.

National Party At Kara. At Kara yesterday afternoon a branch of the New Zealand National Party was formed, the committee elected, with power to add, being Messrs D. T. Wood (chairman), A. E. Walker (secretary), R. J. McKinley, J. McKinley, F. Courtney, H. Smith.

Elderly Woman Breaks Arm, An elderly woman, Mrs Gertrude Brown, of Grant Street, Kamo, fell while working in her kitchen yesterday, and sustained a broken right arm. She was admitted to the Whangarei District Hospital at 8.30 p.m., and this morning her condition wai reported to be satisfactory.

Drinking at Dances. The Minister of Justice wrote to the Whangarei Borough Council last night acknowledging intimation that the council supports the recommendation with reference to drinking in and about dance halls, submitted by the Grand Jury to the Hon. Mr Justice Reed. In reply, the Minister stated that this matter was receiving the attention of the Government.

Refresher Course

A refresher course for officers and non-commissioned officers of the permanent military forces of the northern military district commenced at Arawa Park racecourse, Rotorua, on Sunday, and will continue until Saturday next. Forty-six officers and n.c.o’s. are in camp under the command of Major N. W. McD. Weir, who is temporarily acting as officer commanding the district.

Native Pigeons In Western Hills. “It’s 40 years since I saw a similar thing,” said Mr Frank Holman yesterday morning in describing how he came upon a native pigeon bathing in a stream not far from the end of Rust Lane yesterday morning. For many years native pigeons have been scarce on the mainland, but recently there have been a marked increase in their numbers. Native pigeons are now more plentiful in the Western Hills than they have been for 30 years.

Permit to Live in Caravan.

An unusual application, reflecting the house shortage in the town, came before the Whangarei Borough Council last night. It was made by Mr F. K. Taylor, who sought permission to live in a caravan on a section recently acquired by his wife in Whau Valley Road, until such time as their house, the erection of which would commence in December-, was built. The application was granted, subject to the inspector’s approval of appointments.

Kaipara Harbour Oysters, Mr A. Tilby, Government Fisheries Inspector at Whakapirau, has been notified that it is the intention of the Government to spend £.1750 during the coming year on the establishment of new oyster beds in the Kaipara harbour. The money will be spent on wages alone, and is the largest single sum ever spent on oyster cultivation in New Zealand. The expenditure of the grant will bring the amount spent on oyster cultivation in the Kaipara harbour to a sum approximating £3OOO.

Grubbing Will Eradicate Eupatorlum. A section of five acres of eupatorium on the property of Mr David Tennant, situated at the end of Rust Lane, has been completely cut down. Mr F. Holman, who undertook the work, says it will check the seeding for the season, but probably the area will need cutting again next year. So strong was the growth of the plant, that patches of blackberry were practically smothered by it. Eupatorium, Mr Holman said, is very shallow rooted, and though cutting prevents the plant spreading, systematic grubbing would soon completely eradicate it.

Dundas Road Lighting. In regard to the request from the Riverside Advancement Association for an extension of the street lighting in Dundas Road, the electrical engineer, Mr W. J. Dawson, has submitted a report to the Whangarei Borough Council, estimating the cost of installing four lights at £57 9/. The necessary fittings, lamps and wire would be available when the improved lighting programme in the inner area of the town was competed. The electrical committee’s recommendation that consideration be deferred until after the e’nd of the financial year was adopted.

No “School Concession.”

Confirming the booking of the Town Hall for December 16, the night of the Whangarei High School prize-giv-ing ceremony, the secretary of the High School Board of Governors, writing to the Whangarei Borough Council, added: “I have also to make application for the usual concession of half rate for school functions.” On the recommendation of the legal and finance committee, the council fixed the hire fee at £1 10/, and decided to

draw attention to the fact that there

is no “usual concession,” as mentioned, embodied in the schedule of

charges,
