FIRE SWEEPS THROUGH GEYSER VALLEY, WASRAKEI
[Special To “Northern Advocate'’] ROTORUA, This Day.
The famous Geyser Valley at Wairal:oi was’swept by fire yesterday, scrub being set alight and the pine trees, which have afforded shade to thousands of sightseers, were burnt. Tiie flames advanced along a wide front, and at one stage it was feared that they might encroach as far as the township and threaten the Wairakei Hotel.
It was not until a hastily-organised fire gang had constructed a break and the wind changed that anxiety was relieved. The fire was still burning on both sides of the main Rotorua road last night, but the worst is now over, and it is expected shortly to burn itself out.
The. cause of the outbreak is not known, but a Maori youth is reported to have left a disabled motor cycle on the, roadside, and it is believed that the strong- beat of the sun exploded the petrol in the tank.
The thermal attractions of the vallov have not been affected.
