MAORI COMMITTEE FORMED HERE
A representative meeting of Maoris of the Wh'angare'i district was held in Whangarei. This was convened by Mr Lou Davis, in conjunction with Messrs Albert Mackie and George Hansard.
Outlining the objects of the gathering, Mr Davis said he felt there was an urgent need for a committee to be set up to look after the welfare of Maoris of the district. This committee could deal with social problems, and interest various pakehas in the problems of Maoris of this district. The aim of the committee would be the betterment of the Maori. It would have no political flavour.
“There are Maori committees elected in other districts,” Mr Davis added, “and in a big centre like Whangarei, it seems wrong that no similar committee should exist.
Today the meeting took a definite step forward, and the following committee, was elected, with power to add:
President, Mr Kake Porowini; vicepresident, Mr Lou Davis: committee. Messrs George Hansard, Albert Mackie; E. Yv’. Taylor, D. Baylor and Ihaia Hit'a.
It was decided that this committee should be known as the Maori Kotahilanga. December 23 was decided upon as the next meeting date of the committee. Mr Kake Porowini made his residence available to the committee for this meeting, and other Maoris interested in the project arc cordially invited to attend.
