WOMEN’S Institute NEWS

for

Awanui

Mrs McCarthy presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Awanui Women’s Institute. Winners of the monthly competitions were announced as follows: — Seniors: Supper cloth, Mrs H. Subritsky; mat. Mrs H. Subritsky; baby s dross. Mrs . H. H. Cowie; juniors: toy, Miss Gladys Matthews. The guessing competition for a pair of lea-towels was won by Mrs Souter. Mesdames Subritsky, Shalders and Stensness were the hostesses.

Hokiamga Federation

. The first meeting of the North Hokianga Federation of Women’s Institutes was held at Mangamuka Bridge on Saturday. 13th inst. Miss Anderson (president) was unable to attend, and the chair was taken by Mrs Dyei (vice-president. All' other members were present. Mrs Horn (Native organiser) attended, and was most helpful in directing the committee of the new Federation.

Maunu

The November meeting of the Maunu Women’s Institute was held on the 13th inst, having been postponed from -the week before. The chair was taken by Mrs Griffen, vice-president, and the meeting opened with the singing of “Comrades and Friends." A vote of sympathy was accorded Mis j. H. Hayward and her family, all members standing in silence. The lecture for the day was a particularly interesting one, “Dietetics,” given by Mrs Steadman, of Whangarei, who very kindly, afterwards, answered numbers of questions on members’ own problems. Mrs Steadman also judged the points competition in conjunction with Mrs O’Shea, the competition being for the best laundered tablecloth. First place was won by Miss Carter, with Mis Griffen second and Mrs H. Hawken third. The roll-call was “Lectures and demonstrations I should like,” giving members an opportunity to make suggestions. A new member was elected, and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. The hostesses for the day were Mrs and Miss Millington.

Fair bum

The monthly meeting of the Fairburn Womens Institute was held in the ball recently. Mrs Lupton presiding over a fair attendance of members. Two now members were enrolled and arrangements were made for the table at the bi-annual federation meeting at Pcria on November 27. Points prizes for the past six months arc to be awarded as follows:—Senior, thrift. Miss M. Thomas 1, Miss B. Thomas 2; flowers, Mrs Fisher 1, Mrs Dangen and Misses B. and M. Thomas 2. Juniors, Miss A. Semenoff 1, Miss D. Atkinson 2. A short talk was given by Mrs Vazcy on Mrs Elizabeth Fry. A trading table was held for W.1.-funds-arid a written competition was won by Miss B. Thomas. Afternoon tea was served by the Fairburn members.

Maungaturoto

A most enjoyable meeting was held at the Masonic Hall on Thursday when a good number of members passed a happy afternoon. Miss E. Healey presided and welcomed members and friends. Miss Hazel Smith described her happy holiday in Auckland during “Education Week” and was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Ridling, assisted by Mesdames A. Newitt, R. Cullen and Les Mollard, presented a reading of “The Merchant of Venice,” which was greatly enjoyed, A competition for Christmas gifts not to cost more than 2/6 was won by Mrs Eager for a worked toilet set. Mrs Builen was third, with a worked apron, and Mrs Ron Cullen’s hand-painted organdie apron was third. A dainty afternoon tea was served by Mrs Len Worthington, Mrs Pritchard and Mrs Eager.

Taheke

The monthly meeting of the Taheke Women’s Institute was held in Mrs W. H. White’s residence. Thejre was a large attendance. The competition for the month was won by Mrs W. H. White, with Mrs C . Goodhew second. Mrs E. Goodhew was the winner of a competition held in aid of Institute funds. Mrs White was hostess. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs White.

Group Meeting

The half-yearly meeting of the “Haeremai” Group, comprising the Russell, Paihia, Opua, Taumarere, andi Moerewa Institutes, was held in the] Moerewa picture theatre on November 4. The chairwoman, Mrs Cotterell, Moerewa, welcomed all present, and introduced Mrs Johnston, Waima, president of the new Bay of Islands Federation. Mrs Mac Kay, group convener and secretary, reported that group funds were in credit, and read an apology for absence from the Paihia Institute. The motto was, “If you receive a good turn, never forget it; if you do a good turn, never remember it.” Mrs McMullen, Taumarere. was appointed chairwoman for next meeting. It was decided to accept the invitation of Opua to visit there for the next group meeting, which is to take the form of a picnic. The roll-call, “A humorous incident in my life,” was responded to by Mesdames Brewer (Taumarere), King (Russell), Crawshaw, Mac Kay (Opua), Christie and Cotterell (Moerewa). Mrs Johnston gave a most inspiring and helpful talk on many matters connected with the Institute movement. Mrs Horn, organiser of the Maori Women’s Institutes, with a district from Whangarei to Te Kao, gave an interesting talk on her work. She told how all could help in the way of starting pieces of work, and truly welcoming our Maori sisters amongst us. Mrs Horn appealed to all Institutes to find ways and moans of raising money to assist their parent body, and so extend the great work. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the speakers. After lunch, two members from each Institute acting as hostesses, Mrs Horn displayed a most interesting array of arts and crafts. Mrs Lindauer, of Russell, gave a very interesting and instructive talk and demonstration on “Sea-weed jelly and how to make it.” Plays were given as follows: Russell, “What's in a Name?”; Moerewa, “Safe Custody”; Opua, “Peace in Our Time.” A song was given by Mrs Wyatt (Taumarere): and a recitation by Mrs Boswell (Taumarere). A feature of the social programme was the announcing of each item by loudspeaker by Mr A. Hibbert, the Moerewa picture projectionist. A competition. “Article to cost not more than 2 / -, suitable for Christmas present,” resulted: Mrs Lemon I, Mesdames Deeming and Mac Kay, equal, 2.

After afternoon lea had been served, presidents from other Institutes thanked Moerewa for its hospitality. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem (chorus in Maori by Mrs Horn), ended a most instructive and pleasant day.

There was a good attendance at the ' monthly meeting of the Matapouri Women's Institute, held in the Mata-, pouri Hall on November 17. Mrs Mor- 1 rison. president, was in the chair. The, meeting opened with the National An- j them. The usual business was dealt with, including arrangements for a Christmas tree for children. There j was quite a nice lot of toys and parcels. The competition, child's dress j from one yard of material, resulted: I Mrs T. Clements 1, Mrs Watson and j Mrs Mackenzie, equal, 2. The compe-, tition, film actresses, was won by Mrs j Langman. i A pianoforte duet by Mrs Woolley and Miss Bines was greatly appreciated. A nice afternoon tea served by | the hostesses, Mrs Mahanga and Miss; Jenkins, brought a pleasant afternoon j to a close. : i

Moerewa |

At the last monthly meeting of the | Moerewa Women’s Institute, Mrs I Strange, a vice-president, presided j over a fair attendance of members, j The singing of the Ode was followed by the motto ‘'He who sows courtesy j reaps friendship; he who plants kindness gathers love.” The treasurer reported a satisfactory credit balance. Mrs Powell, delegate to the group meeting on November 4 gave a report, for which she was accorded, a vote of thanks. Two new members, Mesdames Reece and Hansen, were enrolled. The roll call was “Ideas for improving the Institute.” There were several entries for the competition, “An article suitable for a bazaar,” Miss Strange being first and Mrs Sommerville second. For entertainment “A Memory Test” proved popular. Mesdames Cotterell, Dixon, and Miss Strange were hostesses. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Moerewa Birthday Party

On the evening of November 17, the Moerewa Picture Theatre was a scene of gaiety when the sixth birthday of the local Women’s Institute was celebrated. There was a good attendance of members, friends and visitors from other Intsitutes and the W.D.F.U. An innovation was the announcing of each item on the programme by Mr A. Hibbert. the Moerewa picture projectionist, through a loud speaker. A relay game “Hockey on the ice,” provoked much merriment. In a competition, “Tearing an elephant from paper,” honours went to Mr R, English and [Miss Squire, the judging being kindly : undertaken by Mrs Brewer. A wall competition was won by Mrs Clifford. The Monte Carlo waltz went to Mrs Nuttall and partner, and the spot waltz to Mr and Mrs Bleakley. Dance music was supplied by Mr Albert Hibbert. An adjournment for supper was made to the adjoining hall, where a sumptuous repast was handed round by members. The handsome birthday cake, bearing six candles, was lit by vice-presidents Mesdames Powell and Strange. The cake was made by a member, Mrs Cosson, iced by Mrs McMillan, Moerewa, cut by Mrs Cotterell, a past president, and handed round to those present. On behalf of Taumarere Institute Mrs Lemon thanked ! Moerewa Institute for the pleasant evening, and Mrs Reid spoke on behalf of the Kawakawa W.D.F.U. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” terminated a pleasant social gathering. Birthday greetings were received from a former member, Mrs Harvey, now of Takapuna.

Onerahi

The Onerahi Women’s Institute held its usual monthly meeting in the town hall on November 10, with a very good | attendance. The meeting opened with ; the Creed, after which all business was put through very briskly. A dance was arranged in aid of Federation funds for November 27. A competition, arranged by Mrs E. Dyer, was won by Mrs R. Going and Mrs J. Hodgson. The roll call “An outstanding experience,” proved a very interesting item. The hostesses for the afternoon, Misses Riddle. Handforth, and Mesdames Smith and E. Beasley, provided a delicious afternoon tea.
