Whangarei Rowing Season Commences
j In brilliant sunshine. and with a i good attendance of supporters present, j the Whangarci Rowing Club opened ■ its season today. Mr W. Maurer. vice-president, ! officiated in the absence of the prcsi- | dent, who was unable to attend, j ’‘l sincerely hope that this season j will bring forth all the qualities that have in past years made the Blue and | White jerseys a power to be considj erect in competitive rowing,” said Mr I Maurer. "Rowing, to my mind, is a j sport, a hard sport, yet one of the i finest. It calls for the best that is in I a man —it calls for sacrifice, clean livj ing and self-denial, j "One who has been selected to represent his club at any regatta must be j prepared to sacrifice to a great extent ■ his social activities; ho must observe regular and early hours; he must make up his mind that by failing in this respect he, in all probability, is letting down the rest of his crew. "Also, I would impress this upon you most forcibly: Respect your captain and selector. They are men who have been through the mill and though at times their judgment, in your eyes, may not seem right, put your weight behind them with a smile. Dissension means the loss of any race. “Remember that the bow, man is just as important as the stroke. Foci proud of being selected and row to win.” Mr Maurer closed his speech with the sincere hope that the new season ■would see the blue and white colours j well to the fore in the coming year. He then formally declared the season open. .During the afternoon four teams competed in a trial fours competition, with the president’s trophies at stake.
