The Forbury Parle Trotting Club’s spring meeting opened yesterday in perfect weather.
The newly-surfaced track was very fast, two track records being beaten and one equalled. The totalisator handled £16,442/10/, compared with £16,606/10/ last year, a decrease of £164. The single pool betting system was used yesterday for the first time for several years. Results:—
President’s Handicap, of 500 sovs.; two miles.—(4) Big Author, 24 yds., 1; (2) Plutus, scr., 2; (5) Southern Smile, scr., 3. Five other starters. Length; two lengths. Time; 4.19. The winner’s time is a track record, beating the previous best time by one second. Spring Handicap, of 200 sovs.; one mile and thi’ee furlongs.—(7) Southern Chief, scr., 1; (1) Colonel Gi’attan, scr., 2; (2) Superior Rank, scr., 3. Thirteen other starters. Head; five lengths. Time; 2.57 4-5. All the placed horses bettered the previous track record of S.l.
