Big' Features Of October Issue The varied charm of New Zealand has worthy treatment by well-known writers in the October issue of the “New Zealand Railways Magazine.” Eileen Duggan, in prose as colourful as it is smooth, gives impressions of Marlborough. O. N. Gillespie Vividly sets out spectacular features of the railway route from Stratford to Taumarunui. Stewart Perry, in th- “ Lake Isle Of Mokoia,” pleasantly recalls the famous love romance of Hinemoa and Tutanekai. A. C. Snowden throws some new light on lire scenery of the South Island Midland Railway District. In “Spectre Of The Brocken,” R, F. Page tells of a. thrillful experience on Mr. Egmont. Stirring stories of the old Maori wars are given by James Cowan in “The Surprise of Opepe Camp” (a race for life by Trooper Crosswell across the Kaingaroa Plain) and by “Arawa” in “Historic Maketu” (which mentions the helpful aid of the Arawa tribe against Maori insurgents) “The Old Alacrity” is the appropriate title of a humorous chronicle in which Ken Alexander, in merry lines atid drawing, discusses recent provisions for the safety of pedestrians in city streets. John Harland-Barber gives lan impressive array of facts and figures to show how the railways serve the farmers. “Helen” has another big budget of distinctly helpful notes and comments for women. W. F, Ingram maintains his high standard of description and comment in “Panorama Of The Playground,” An Australian writer, R. H, Weston, tells why Katoomba. on the heights of the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, is known as “The Queen City Of The Hills,” a locality which has also won another title, “The Playground Of The GPmmon wealth,”
