BRIDGE TO BE REPLACED AS FLOOD RELIEF

The provision of a bridge to alleviate flooding at Moewhare on the Oak-leigh-Paparoa main highway, has recently been the subject of discussion between the Whangarei County Council and the northern representative of the Main Highways Board.

Mr Packwood advised the council to-day that a single-way 30ft. span rolled steel joist structure on the Oak-leigh-Waipu section of the State highway was to be replaced' at an early date with a two-way reinforced-con-crete bridge. Immediately the new structure was available for use, the bridge it replaced would be removed and reex’ected at Moewhare.

Complete immunity from abnormal flooding was not considered practicable on account of back-waters, but the provision of this 30ft. span would effect considerable improvement under existing conditions.

The cost of the proposal would be considerably less than that of the alternative of a new reinforced-concrete bridge, and payment of the council’s proportion of the total cost could be deferred, if desired, until the next financial year. Both the country chairman and Cr. A. Stephen commented that the communication was most satisfactory.
