Impassable To Horse Traffic
Settlers on the Kaimamaku Peach Orchard Road wrote to the Minister of Public Works asking for assistance. They staled that the road was in a deplorable condition and was impassable even for a horse rider. “There is a grant allotted for the fixing and repairing of the road,” the letter continued, “and yet we find that nothing has been done and not a td spent. “The council will not shoulder the liability and has referred us to the P.W.D.” In referring this letter to the council, the district engineer said that, although the nature of tire work appeared to bo maintenance rather than formation, no proposal had been received from the council for expenditure of the current free money grant of .£IOO. It is understood that metalling on the road appears in “A” order of urgency in the council’s recommendation for the Five Year Programme.
The county engineer said that proposals had been held up while a proposal for extending the road beyond the bridge for a full width, of 14ft. was discussed. No settlers were involved, but landowners desired that the road be opened to give reasonable access for the shifting of cattle. The matter was left in the hands of the riding member and engineer, who will arrange a conference, if possible, with Mr Packwood.
