Russians Applaud Stalin

(Received 2 p.m.) MOSCOW, June 25. Stalin visited the aerodrome to welcome the transpolar airmen, Schmidt and Vodopianoff. in the company of scores of Soviet leaders, whose attendance contradicted rumours of their arrest. An airman sprang to the dais and kissed Stalin, Marshal Voroshiloff and Marshal Budenny. The vice-Premier, Churbar, declared that Russians, now that General Tukhachevsky and his gang were destroyed, were more devoted than ever to national defence. Schmidt, one of the polar fliers, replied: “When we heard by wireless of Tukhachevsky’s treason, we decided to give our last drop of blood to defend Stalin.

Flower-decked cars bore the airmen along eight crowded miles of highway to the Kremlin.
