Budge Defeats Hecht (Received 1 p.m.) ’ - LONDON, June 25. The members of the New Zealand cricket .team were present on the fifth day of the British lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon, and had the pleasure of seeing their countryman, A. C. Stedman, take B. M. Grant, the United States Davis Cup player, to five sets. , \ \ , i ’ The Auckland player had a long struggle against the tiny American, who was handicapped by an.injured ankle owing to a fall yesterday. He continued pluckily despite another fall today. Stedman played excellently to win the first two sets. When the “seeded” American went ahead in the third set Stedman apparently decided to take a “breather,” and he lost the set.l —6. Stedman cameagain in the fourth set, but never headed Grant; who, despite lameness, continued manfully. He won the ninth.game after three deuces to dead 5—4, and took the set in the next game. Budge, by defeating Hecht, Czechoslovakia, won his fourth match in the tournament in straight sets, which no other player has so far achieved. Hecht previously had not lost a set in the singles.
