Mr and Mrs Middleton, of Otaika Road, motored to Onehunga last Saturday, where they were the ( guests of their daughter, Mrs S. J. Poolman.
Mrs Poolman, Otaika Road, motored with Mr and Mrs Middleton to Onehunga. She has been the guest of her brother, Mr Hookings, of the Auckland Savings Bank, and her daughter, Mrs A. McCaughey, Devonport. - The esteem in which Sir Andrew Russell, General Officer Commanding the Hew Zealand Division in France, is held by returned soldiers, was exemplified at' the Returned Soldiers’ Association Conference, when it was stated that a portrait of Sir Andrew was to be hung in the National Art Gallery, but that subscriptions from returned soldiers were some £2O short. Within a few minutes.a large sum was subscribed. It was suggested that miniature prints of the portrait should be available and also larger copies made for individual associations. Mr W. Wilson, of Cambridge, who has received an appointment in Whangarei, Was farewelled prior to leaving .for the- North. The “Waikato Independent,” published at Cambridge, slates: —Sport in the Cambridge district has suffered a distinct Idss with the departure of Mr W. Wilson, son of Mr and Mrs James Wilson, of Williamson Street, for Whangarei, where he has secured a position. As captain of the Blues football team and captain ot the. Colts cricket team he indicated his ability and the confidence reposed in him by his team mates. Mr Wilson was educated- at the Cambridge primary and secondary schools and having completed his apprenticeship as a chemist with Mr W. J. Smellie, he is now seeking further experience in the. North. There is little doubt he willfigure prominently in sport at Whangarei. Mr Wilson was presented with a leather suitcase as a farewell gift.
