Starters That Jam
The Behdix principle commonly adopted in the design of modern starting motors is highly ingenious, but with new cars the mechanism frequently jambs, and only too often the starter is blamed. Jamming can be reduced to a minimum— often entirely stopped—by observing two simple rules. The first is never lubricate the quick thread, and the second, clean it frequently by squirting it with kerosene. To starve such mechanism of lubricant may appear to be brutal, but it is one of those cases when one has to be .cruel to be kind. Oil collects dust, grit, and so on, than which there is no more formidable enemy.
