Annual Meeting Held Last Night

The annual meeting of the Whangarei High School Old Pupils Association was held at Carruth House last

alight. There was an attendance of about 30.

In his annual repo rt, the president, Mr. J. McLeod said that the main objective during the year had been the building of the Memorial Gates at the Kent Road entrance to the school. This work was now nearing completion and had been made possible by donations from old pupils, together with assistance from the Board of Governors and the school. Mr. McLeod said that it was the Intention of the committee to |iold the unveiling ceremony at re-union time, and August 17 had been booked as the date for the annual ball. Officers Elected. The following officers were elected: 'President, Mr. J. McLeod (re-elected); vice-presidents,, Miss D. Lupton and Mr. D. J. Thomson; secretary. Miss L : Wilkinson; assistant secretary, Mr. W. Coote; treasurer, Mr. N, Saul; • three committee members, Miss B. Brown, and Messrs H. G. Carruth and H. Day; auditors, Messrs D. Baird and J. Doel.

The balance sheet showed that cash in hand at the end of the year totalled £l3O 15/5. This Includes funds collected for the gates, and there is a further £SO granted by the Board of Governors towards the erection of the gates to come. A vote of condolence with the relatives of old pupils who had died during the year was -carried, all those present standing in silence. A recommendation 'to the committee was that a reduction in the admission price for the ball be considered. Design of Gates. Mrs J. Donaldson said that the committee deserved congratulation for thechoice of design for the gates. She thought that the design was most effective. The president said that the original design provided for an archway but, on account of the additional expense, this had been omitted. Miss D. Lupton said that the fact that an arch was not quite suitable for the situation of the gates was a consideration. Supper was served at the conclusion.
