WILL REFERENDUM BE TAKEN?
Mr Parry Agreeable; Who
Will Vote?
The question was raised by Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay at yesterday’s amalgama, tion conference, that before compulsory amalgamation was introduced, ratepayers should be given a direct vote.
In referring to the subject, the Minister, the Hon. W. E. Parry, said, that if a vote was taken, the issue should not be decided by a series of district referendums, but by a national referendum.
He said he would meet the local bodies if they desired to meet the issue in this way, and would put all his vitality into the cause, preparing to abide in good feeling, with the wishes of the people, of which he had no doubt. * Who Should Vote? , At a later stage Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay (Whangarei county chairman), said: "The people of the Northland district believe that the ratepayers ■ are in a better position to give sound Judgment on such a matter than the shopgirls and maids in the towns. “If a referendum is taken, the decision should rest with the ratepayers, and not With irresponsible people knowing nothing of local government.
“The Whangarei County Council does not believe in compulsory amalgamation. While the man on the land is contributing- so heavily, he should have some special say as to what should be done.” '
