WHANGAREI NEWS BREVITIES
IN RECESS.— The Whangarei Horticultural Society last night, decided to go into recess, and an emergency committee consisting of Messrs. Stringer and Brown, and Mesdames R. S. Finch and W. W. Logan, was appointed to look after the interests of the society while in recess.
FORGERY ALLEGATION.— A total of fifteen indictments covering the period July 17, 1936, to March 20, 1937, were preferred against a dairy machine salesman and fitter, James Hastie Stoddart, in the Police Court yesterday. Eighteen witnesses were heard, and the case was still proceeding when the “Advocate” went to press.
BRIGHTER WHANGAREI. The brightening up of the business premises during Show Week was mentioned at the meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce last night. A circular has been sent to business people asking them to ipake special displays and to keep their lights on during Show Week until 10.30 p.m.
INFORMAL RECEPTION.—On the occasion of his first official visit to Northland since obtaining Cabinet rank, the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, was accorded an informal reception by Whangarei local bodies. Speakers were Mr Parry, the Mayor, and Messrs. A. T. Brainsby, J. G. Barclay, J. A. Finlayson, J. A. S. Mac Kay, H. W. James, H. F. Menzies, R. G. Hosking and H. W. Crawford.
