Whangarei Registers Two Wins [Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
The annual Country Week hockey tournament, under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association and the Auckland Ladies’ Hockey Association, commenced yesterday at the Remuera grounds. The men played the opening rounds of the White Horse Cup competition and the ladies competed for the Provincial Cup. The main purpose of the tourney is, to help the game among the subassociations. The White Horse Cup is at present held by Rodney, and the Provincial Cup by King Country. Results of yesterday’s play are:— White Horse Cup. First Round. A Section.—Waipa A 11 (B. Spires 9, A. Spires 1, Gibson 1) .beat Whakatane 0; King Country A 2 (Peacock 1, Fleet 1), Rodney B 0; Franklin A 2 (Gilmour 1. Hunter D, Piako 1 (Stevens 1). B Section.-—Franklin B 2 (Harvey 1, Williams 1), Thames-Hauraki 0; Rodney A 8 (J. Grimmer 5, T. Grimmer 2, Jones 1), King Country B 0; Whangarei 5 (Ormandy 2, Byles 1, Sloane 1, Byrt 1), Waipa B 1 (Payne 1). Provincial Cup. First Round.
