At the monthly meeting of the Taumarere branch of the Women’s Institute, the main theme of discussion was the beautifying of the church, and a report of inquiries made ; with regard to the claim that the building is older than the Russell Church. Mrs MacMullen read letters she had received from old identities, which bear out the claim. Mr W.’ E. Bedggood, of Waimate North, wrote at considerable and interesting length, quoting from “The Life of H. Williams.” The information all points to the certainty that part of the Taumarere Church, at least, is of the original building at Paihia, which H. Williams declared to be the first Church built in New Zealand. It was decided to fence off a portion of the grounds, to be plant*! later with native trees and shrubs,,the remaining portion, to be let for grazing in return for the care and upkeep o| the fences. • '
