Cleanliness In The Shed . Emphasising the vital point of shed cleanliness' Th the maintenance of a good standard cream supply, Mr C. Halligan, factory manager of Maungaturoto dairy company suppliers at Paparoa, said that the elimination of the milk from any cow which showed signs of disease was most important. If included, such a small percentage would affect a large amount of cream. Speaking of the need for safeguarding the health of the herd, he quoted a case of cows being dogged unduly, with the result that they had become overheated, affecting the whole supply.
Want Bridge Raised.' Messrs W. G. Attwood and P. Kokich wrote to the Whangarei ' County Council yesterday asking that the bridge over the Mahgere Stream, Kara, be raised above ordinary flood level. They; complained that the smallest flood made the bridge impassable for through traffic, which was increasing. Both the chairman, Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, and Cr. J. H. HayWard, the riding members concerned, agreed upon the importance of the road and the desirability of a better bridge, the cost of which, the engineer estimated would bo £450. Further consideration *is to be given to, the matter by these councillors.
Raising Highways Above Floods. Recently the district engineer, in company with Cr. G. Martin, visited low-lying sections of the OpuawhangaOtonga and Russetl-Whakapara Roads. Since then, a survey has been undertaken by the Public Works Department, presumably with the intehtion of raising these portions of the highway above flood level. Cr. Martin told, the Whangarei County, Council that, while the settlers appreciated the necessity of the work, they desired that a request be made to the district engineer for the provision of adequate spillways, feeling that otherwise the fillings would have the effects of backing up flood waters. The council decided to forward the representations to the district engineer. Noxious Weed Inspection.
Advice has been received from the Minister of Agriculture that, from the end of May, the department’s permanent inspector for the Northland district would give his attention to noxious weeds affairs in the Whangarei county for the winter months, but that an assistant will again be employed early in the spring. The Whangarei County Council and other farming organisations were instrumental in having the engagement of a whole time ragwort inspector extended until the end of last month. When the intimation was received at yesterday’s meeting of the county council, the chairman, Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, said that the position appeared quite Satisfactory, and Cr. T. N. Blake said that it was wise to nip such things in the bud. It was decided to thank the Minister for extending the engagement, of the assistant inspector.

Elephant on a Truck An amusing and decidly unusual sight in Whangarei yesterday afternoon was a large elephant standing on the back of a motor truck being driven through the town. The animal was apparently quite unconcerned and stood on the un-enclosed rear space of the truck looking over the driver’s cab. The animal belonged to the circus which is visiting the town and was watched with great interest by many people.
